Mintie

18.06.92 – 15.03.08

We originally got a beagle because of their disposition, short coat and size.  Our girls were 5 and 7, our dog went everywhere with us and because of the girls’ size, dog size was a consideration.

Mintie was 6 months old when we collected her from the breeder.  She positioned herself on the back seat between the girls and never looked back as Bev, her breeder, tearfully watched us disappear down the driveway and, thus, began our 15 year relationship with Mintie.

She epitomised “beagle” to us.  She was “an appetite with skin” and if she ever got away we just had to wait for her to come back to us - she recognised the word “dinner” but not “come”.

Mintie was, though, a loyal and devoted family member.  She played with the girls, ran with dad and kept mum company – was always delighted to be with us.  When she was younger she made the lawn look like a practice putting green whilst she hunted for lawn beetles, she chewed a number of precious things but was forgiven because we couldn’t not forgive her.

She was a sturdy and robust dog, as most beagles are.  As she got older she got a bit stiff and a bit hard of hearing and was delighted when we got her a dog (sweet Bronte) to alert her to our homecoming or prospective intruders.

She loved her walks even towards the end when a walk constituted a meander to the corner of the street (about 30 metres) and home again and dinner was always eagerly awaited.

She finally succumbed to cardiomyopathy, a little dog leaving a big gap in her family.

And as for that short coat – because she was “one of the girls” was happy to be preened and to have her hair done (a quick once over with the vacuum cleaner on a low setting) but no amount of vacuuming or brushing would rid our floors of those fur bunnies!

Polly Tribute

Polly

To our fellow Beagles, last Tuesday our house has been very quiet without the happy yodelling of my sister Polly.  (2008 Beagle calendar January and April)

Last long weekend we had a lovely time at Snowy Paws, with strolls around Lake  Jindabyne and lots of
lovely sniffs and smells.  We got home on Monday afternoon and Polly and I went to do our usually check of the back garden to make sure that the pussy cat from down the road had not been there in our absence.  Whilst doing our rounds, Polly found and dug up one of my bones that I had been saving and true to form would not let me have it until she had finished a good long munch.  By then it was time to let mum and dad know with her usually insistent yodelling, that it was definitely our dinner time.  After a good meal and a few more laps of the garden it was time to settle happily in front of the telly in our baskets.

On Tuesday morning dad got up at 6.30am to make a cup of tea, patted me as he walked past my basket and as usual expected to see Polly wandering around the garden, but unfortunately this was not the case.  Our beautiful girl was still warm and lying peacefully on the pavers after what the vet said later would be a heart attack or a stroke.  Dad called mum and they moved her back inside where they tried to resuscitate her
without success.

Polly was a lovely Beagle with a gentle nature and a happy soul.  She died quickly at the great old age of 17
years and 2 months to the day, after a lovely family weekend at one of her favourite places.  She did not suffer and was still active and well, with only the odd arthritis twinge (kept in check with acupuncture) and some
deafness, although mum and dad said she always had selective deafness (it’s a Beagle thing isn’t it!)

Whilst she won’t be the oldest Beagle at the Christmas party this year, I am sure she will be there in spirit.

As a family we are devastated but we are grateful for the long time we had with her and the wonderful memories we will keep in our hearts forever.

Woofs and wags,

Bryson
